It is one of the oldest churches in this area, founded between the 6th and 7th centuries. Originally dedicated to San Cipriano, in 1502 it underwent an extension, on the occasion of which it was named after San Stefano.
Archaeological excavations in the late 1980s and early 1990s have revealed some ancient tombs located inside the church. The frescoes in the apse basin from the 16th century and a mosaic from the 11th century are noteworthy.
