Water and energy saving

Saving water

Often when we are on holiday we do not give too much importance to water and we tend to use it in an uncontrolled manner as if it were inexhaustible: but in reality it is not! Even when we are on holiday, let us adhere to a few simple good practices when using the 'blue gold'.

According to the latest United Nations World Water Development Report, the world could suffer from a 40% overall water shortage by 2030. In fact, the availability of drinking water is progressively decreasing as a consequence of ongoing climate change and global warming, but also as a result of increasing needs due to population growth and growing consumption by industry and agriculture.

It is therefore extremely important for each of us to do our part to limit consumption and reduce waste, including by adopting the few simple good practices that we list in the form of a decalogue:

  1. If possible, prefer the shower to the bathtub;
  2. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving or otherwise;
  3. Use the flush with dual flush as needed;
  4. If possible, use the washing machine and dishwasher with a full load;
  5. Wash dishes or anything else in a basin and not in running water;
  6. Wash vegetables by soaking them in a basin; the same water can be used to water plants and flowers;
  7. Water your garden and plants sparingly and if possible after sunset, using reclaimed water or rainwater and drip systems;
  8. Prefer the use of water bottles to the use of plastic water bottles;
  9. Repair or promptly report any leaks from taps or toilets;
  10. Have the pool covered with a floating blanket, it will slow down evaporation.

Energy saving

Reducing energy consumption today is essential to limit the depletion of fossil fuels, but above all to reduce pollution and combat climate change. This is also true when you are on holiday, as a guest in an establishment. Here are some simple tricks to avoid waste.

As a destination, we promote a series of good practices for domestic energy saving. With a few tricks, we can waste fewer resources, reduce the environmental impact of our homes and save on energy costs.

Household appliances

  • Switch off unused household appliances;
  • Use ECO programmes for washing machines, dishwashers and other household appliances;
  • Choose modern appliances with higher energy efficiency, i.e. class A++;
  • Use washing machines and dishwashers if possible between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., energy will cost you less;
  • When you have finished washing machine and dishwasher programmes, remember not to leave them on stand-by (flashing light);
  • Remember from time to time to clean the filters of both, you will improve their efficiency;
  • Reduce the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors to a minimum;
  • Remember from time to time to clean the fridge and defrost the freezer in order to preserve food better, prevent unpleasant odours and improve efficiency;
  • To save energy and money, we recommend setting the fridge temperature between 1°C and 4°C and the freezer temperature to -18°C;
  • Before putting food in the fridge and freezer make sure that it is not yet warm;
  • When leaving on holiday try to have them empty;
  • When using the oven avoid opening it too many times during operation;
  • Favour ventilated or convection models, they will circulate heat evenly;
  • If you need the air conditioner, turn it on making sure the windows are closed;
  • Check the air conditioner's filters at least once a year and clean them if necessary. If they are dirty, they consume more power and gas.
  • Set the air conditioner at a temperature not too different from the outside temperature (a maximum deviation of 6° is recommended).

Lights

  • Make the most of natural light for room lighting;
  • If you can, replace normal light bulbs with LED ones;
  • Always remember to switch off all lights before leaving the house or when changing rooms

PC, telephone and TV

  • Set the 'power-saving' feature on all devices, it will extend battery life;
  • Reduce the brightness of screens;
  • Do not leave PCs and TVs in stand-by or screensaver mode;
  • Unplug your PC and TV when switched off;

At the cooker

  • Prefer using a pressure cooker to reduce time and consumption;
  • Use lids as much as possible to minimise heat loss;
  • Prefer to use the medium-low flame, it consumes less despite slightly longer times;

Finally, when you go on holiday always remember to close the main water, gas and electricity meters, so you will avoid nasty surprises on your return and you will not consume energy resources unnecessarily!
